The Artists Sample Clips Notes About the Music
Leopold Godowsky III Pianist, composer and teacher, Leopold Godowsky III (1938--2011), heir to a great musical tradition, was the nephew of George Gershwin and grandson of the legendary pianist-composer Leopold Godowsky.

Besides studying music with his father from the age of five, in his early twenties he studied piano with Wolfgang Rosé (student of Arthur Schnabel and Walter Gieseking) and composition with Charles Shackford (student of Paul Hindemith). After graduating from Columbia College and Columbia Teachers College, Godowsky first worked in music publishing and then at Columbia Artists Management, only to discover that indeed his musical gifts warranted a place for him in the world of writing and performing music, and he began concertizing in the U.S. and abroad. He also devoted many years to teaching piano privately and as a member of the faculty at Hartt College of Music. At age 40 after having several years of vivid, inspiring nocturnal dreams with original musical content, Godowsky felt compelled to compose. He wrote chamber music for string quartet, brass quintet, wind quintet, saxophone quartet, harpsichord, piano and an oratorio for vocal quartet.

One of his primary goals was to compose music that has both contemporary and traditional sensibilities, and is highly contrapuntal and emotionally meaningful.

Chopin and Gershwin Concertos Chopin, B Flat Minor and F Major Nocturnes I chose to perform these two Nocturnes because I felt that although all of them are gorgeous, in my opinion these two were among the most beautiful. It's interesting to note the difference between the middle sections of these two works. While the B flat minor is lyrical throughout, the middle section of the F major is stormy and furious, unlike the other 18 Nocturnes.

Chopin, Fantasie Impromptu in C sharp minor
At an early age I remember listening to my grandfather's recording of the Fantasie Impromptu and loved hearing it. He played it so beautifully. That was part of my inspiration to learn and perform this work. One aspect of this piece that is perhaps unique is the continuous rhythm of the right hand playing four notes to the left hand playing three notes in the first and third sections of this work. It may be interesting to note that the popular song by Harry Carroll "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" melody was derived from the middle section of Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu.  DOWNLOAD or LISTEN

Three Gershwin Preludes
George Gershwin composed a number of preludes in the mid-1920's and he first performed some of them at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in 1926. He eventually chose only three for publication; the first and third are vigorous and dance-like, while the second, characterized as a "blues lullaby", is a gentler, more intimate piece.
